New England Oct 5-15, 2012
Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts
This trip will be about the history, nature & beauty of the New England area.
Oct 5-7: Enroute to the East Coast
Oct 6: We will overnight at Niagara Falls.
Oct 7: Vermont: Church Street Market Place in Burlington. The expanse of pedestrian space on the Marketplace features fountains at two locations, extensive brick paving with granite accents, and numerous sculptures, as well as its own distinctive feature: locally quarried boulders placed on two blocks, which offer unique seating. Of particular interest is the Church Street Earth Line, a unique brick and granite band of engraved stones with proportionally separated world city locations running north-south up the center of the street, giving visitors a quick and engaging geography lesson. The Marketplace’s Victorian and Art Deco structures are complemented by modern buildings, the height of which is restricted to preserve the appearance of historic structures. Church Street is the place to see a celebrity, people-watch, shop, dine or explore.
Oct 8: Vermont: Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory Tour, learn about the production process and end with a free sample!
Rock of Ages Quarry, An Uncommon Vermont Experience. Watch as granite is cut in the quarry, learn how to sand blast, watch gifted artisans creating works of art out of the granite.
Bragg Farm Sugarhouse, Ice cream parlor with their famous maple soft serve creamies and maple milkshakes, Maple syrup taste testing, Educational tour, gift shop featuring maple syrup & maple products Vermont Cheeses, specialty foods and a wide variety of gifts, Beautiful mountain views and a covered bridge.
Oct 9: New Hampshire: The White Mountains should be full of color as we drive through their majestry. Profile Lake reveals where the Old Man in the Mountain used to be.
Franconia Notch : Discovered in 1808, the Flume is a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of 70 to 90 feet and are 12 to 20 feet apart.
The beautiful waterfall at the Basin, has at its base, a granite pothole 20 feet in diameter. It is believed to have been eroded 15,000 years ago while the North American ice sheet was melting. It has been smoothed by small stones and sand whirled around by the Pemigewasset River. Below the Basin is a water-eroded rock formation called the Old Man's foot.
Clark's Trading Post, home of the famous trained bears, an excursion on The White Mountain Central Railroad through the authentic covered bridge and into Wolfman's territory are just some of the neat things you will experience here.
