May 2-6, 2012 Brochures available! Call 906-288-3734
Join us for a touch of Holland! Pella is beautiful and unique all year long, but at Tulip Time it comes alive with tulips, Dutch attire, parades, food, fun and more. Thousands of residents wear Dutch attire and celebrate their Dutch heritage. Three days each spring, Pella becomes Holland to Pella residents and visitors alike. Travel back in time with us Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 3, 4, & 5, 2012 to a European village full of windmills, tulips and excitement as we celebrate their 77th anniversary of this colorful festival.
Historical Village
The Historical Village Complex is the restoration project of the Pella Historical Society. Twenty-four buildings surround a courtyard with red brick walkways, blossoming trees, and beautiful tulip gardens. Some of the buildings have been on the site for more than 150 years; others were moved in and restored.
Craft demonstrations include:
We will tour the authentic working Dutch Mill in Pella. Parts were built in Holland and assembled in Pella by skilled Dutch craftsmen. The Vermeer Mill grinds wheat into flour using only wind power and is the tallest working windmill in the United States.
Completed in July 2002, the Vermeer Mill and Interpretive Center are the newest additions to the Historical Village. The Media Room displays a timeline that outlines the history of Pella.

Vermeer Mill Facts:
- Windmill is 100% wind powered
- Total height to the tip of the most upright blade is 124′, giving the Vermeer Mill the distinction of being the tallest working windmill in the United States
- Built by Lucas Verbij from Hoogemade, Netherlands and assembled in Pella by two Dutch craftsmen
- Authentic, working grain mill patterned after a similar 1850s grain mill in the province of Groningen, Netherlands
- The Vermeer Mill reflects Pella’s Dutch and agricultural history
- Built taller than surrounding buildings and trees so the blades capture the wind
Scholte House
Scholte House In 1847, 800 Hollanders, under the leadership of Dominie Hendrik Pieter Scholte, left the Netherlands for America to gain religious freedom. They settled in Iowa and created a town named Pella. Pella means “City of Refuge”, named after a city the early Christians had fled to in Palestine. The Dominie promised his wife Mareah, a beautiful home like the one she left in Holland. He held true to his word and in April 1848 the house was ready. This historic home sits quietly surrounded by award winning flower gardens. It is located on the north side of the square in historic downtown Pella, Iowa. Many of the Scholte’s fine original antiques adorn the museum. You are invited to visit Dominie and Mareah’s home, their furnishings, their paintings, and learn about their life in Pella.
Flower Gardens
Tulips, annuals, perennials and roses paint the Historical Village and Scholte House Gardens with a vibrant palette from April through October.
The waves of colorful tulips that mark Pella’s annual Tulip Festival in May are replaced by beds of perennials, annuals and flowering shrubs that provide for a vivid and inviting summer and autumn.
The 25,000 tulips on the Pella Historical Village grounds make way for summer shade gardens, perennials, annuals and roses. In winter the Village grounds become a garden of lights in celebration of Christmas Walk.
Each year more than 80,000 tulip bulbs and annuals are planted.
Minature Village
Don’t miss the 1:24 scale Miniature Dutch Village. Eighty buildings model traditional Dutch architecture while miniature people dressed in authentic costumes go about the business of daily life in Holland.
The Miniature Dutch Village is located on the 2nd floor of the Interpretive Center. The small towns show architectural characteristics of houses and stores. The village is a “work in progress,” hand crafted by Pella Historical Society volunteers.
The miniature LGB train & trolley complete the scene of 1850’s life in Holland. All Miniature Village buildings have or had a counterpart in The Netherlands.
Be sure to look in the windows of our Miniature Village. The Dutch are very proud of their homes. “Window peeking” is allowed and encouraged to view the beautiful interiors.
Wyatt Earp House
Wyatt Earp House, the boyhood home of Wyatt Earp, was restored in 1966 as a typical 1850s residence. The house, which is located in the Village, is on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
